Q. What’s the age range for the DVDs?


A. Forget about the age ranges. It’s better to select a DVD based on the words or material presented than to select DVDs based on age range. For Children diagnosed with Autism, PDD or a Speech Delay the age range can be expanded upwards by 4 or more years.



Q. How do I decide which DVD to start with?


A. We recommend selecting a DVD containing material that your child is at least 50%unfamiliar with. For example, when selecting a Vocabulary Builder DVD, review the word list and make sure your child is not saying at least half the words featured. (You can click on any DVD and it will bring up a product detail page which will list each of the words or concepts taught in that specific DVD). (Also, look at the chart below which may help point you in the right direction when looking for DVDs)



Q. Were the DVDs originally designed for kids with Autism or PDD?


A. Not at first, Vocabulary Builder 1 released in 1999, was designed for typically developing toddlers. Shortly after we began selling the DVD, we received a flood of incredible feedback from parents of children on the Autism Spectrum. Since then, many of our DVDs have been designed with kids on the Autism Spectrum in mind. Fortunately, the approach used by the DVDs works really well for many groups of kids.



Q. How are the Vocabulary Builder DVDs different from “your baby can read”?


A. We decided to add this question recently since we have had many parents of children on the spectrum call and tell us that they have already purchased the your baby can read series and their child is still not talking. Obviously, they feel that if our product is similar it is unlikely to work for their child. In short, our DVDs are very different from the YBCR DVDs in many important ways, particularly for children on the Autism Spectrum. The two most important differences are:


The “YBCR”DVDs were intended to teach babies to read. They primarily link the written word with the spoken word and a singleimage. Our DVDs are designed to teachkids to TALK.

-  Our DVDs pair the spoken word many times with multiple images of the word being taught. This is important for kids on the spectrum particularly because they often have difficulty generalizing word meanings. For example, this means that a child may learn that the word “dog” corresponds to a particular dog, but he or she may have difficulty making the connection between the word dog and other types of dogs.




Q. My child just loves Vocabulary Builder Volume1, how often should I play it?


A. Aim for no more than once or twice a day. Once your child has learned the words on the video, move on to the next volume. Kids, particularly those on the Autism Spectrum, love familiarity and will watch a favorite video for months on end. The problem is that once the words are learned the video is only providing entertainment, not educational value. Soon your child will come to appreciate the next volume in the series



Q. How can I reinforce the material contained in the videos?


A. Everyday you will find opportunities to reinforce the vocabulary contained in the videos. How you interact and communicate with your child will have a huge impact on language development.Following are some suggestions:


Point out& identify new objects for your child everyday. Don't pass up learning opportunities.


Speak to your child at a level ever so slightly above what you think he or she understands

View the videos with your child and comment on the activity. Expand on the information provided in the videos.


Encourage your child to make sounds and say words by listening and reinforcing early efforts at speech.
